PRA is a genetic eye disease, which until recently had been a serious problem in cardigan breeding. Dogs with PRA were going blind, at a quite young age, and the disease was incurable. The breakthrough came with genetic tests which were able to identify dogs PRA-positive as well as carriers. These tests allowed for a quick solution of the problem. Cardigans were the first breed, where the combined efforts of scientists and good will of the breeders, who tested most of their dog, showed how effective genetic tests could prove.
